A Message from the President (November 2011)
Dear Members: Perhaps the greatest sign of the troubled economy we all face every day can be seen in the number of workers who “give up” and drop out of their local union or association. Sadly, we see it at the PBA/PEA as do our colleagues all over the country. But stop and think about what that means. For starters, it means you are choosing to let management win. By dropping out, you give management exactly what it wants. The fewer members with which it has to deal, the easier it will be to impose its will on you and have it go unchecked.
Secondly, it means you have decided to risk your career and “hope” that the next round of workplace discipline, layoffs, benefit cuts or wage reductions will elude you. Maybe you’ll be correct. But what if you’re not?
FRS Issues Still Evolving; Lawsuit Filed
As everyone who works for a county sheriff’s office is painfully aware, the legislature passed a law in April requiring employees enrolled in the Florida Retirement System to contribute 3% of their salary toward the FRS to defray the cost of their pensions. What some may still be unaware of, however, is that the lawmakers made it a point in the legislation to lower the required contribution employers make by 3%. This came after extensive lobbying by PBA!
Changes Coming to Florida Retirement System
This legislation session, the House and Senate agreed to legislation making multiple changes to the Florida Retirement System, which includes each of our members in county sheriff and tax collector offices. Though the legislation still must be implemented by the Division of Retirement, below are some of the key provisions affecting our members:
