The CFPBA is once again opening the application window for academic scholarships. All CFPBA/PEA members in good standing for the past five years, as well as their children, step-children and grandchildren shall be eligible to compete for this exclusive CFPBA scholarship.

Legislative Session Underway: The Best and Worst

Thanks to the once-a-decade redistricting requirement, the Florida Legislature is meeting early this year. Session began on January 10 and is scheduled to last through early March. Among the positive legislation your CFPBA/PEA is watching this year:
- HB 629/SB 916 Public Records Exemption. This legislation would further strengthen public records exemptions pertaining to law enforcement, prosecutors, judges and other employees with protected home address information. Specifically, the bill would restrict dates of birth from public access. This would apply to spouses and children of covered employees as well. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Ed Hooper and Sen. Steve Oelrich.
BSCO Debate This Month

With a rare, open race for sheriff in Brevard county this year, the CFPBA is doing all it can to ensure our members have a voice and make an informed decision as to who should be the next chief law enforcement officer in the county. To that end, the PBA has scheduled February 23, 2012 at the Police Hall of Fame in Titusville to host a debate among all active candidates for Sheriff. Current candidates include Adrian Beasley, Ernest Cathy, Gary Harrell, Wayne Ivey, Todd Maddox and Mark Orndoff.
Melbourne PD Rallies Ahead of Impasse

Preparing for what could be an arduous battle over wages, pensions, health insurance and shift schedules, the men and women of the Melbourne Police Department PBA bargaining unit came together on January 10 to show solidarity before members of the city council. Over 50 officers, their families and colleagues in the fire department joined together as council members were briefed on the remaining differences in contract negotiations by CFPBA staff.
